A couple of years ago I derived a rough formula for figuring out how much weight any given engine could pull. I used info from the wiki and some basic algebra (I am Not a mathematician nor an engineer, so don't expect much) and came up with this : (wt of rake in tons) = HP/mph*47.67-(wt of engine in tons). Works really well for flat areas with maybe just one slope at 3% grade. Don't forget to add your wt multiplier when calculating how many cars to add to the rake.
If anyone has refinements to add they are more than welcome. As I said this is a ROUGH estimation to give sort of a guideline to start at.
