Is it ever going to happen for simutrans? Perhaps if it did i would venture outside the box of the openttd world...

Seriuos lack of time from me as the main programmer. Other things behing the engine are always overhauled with multiplayer in mind.

If you thing you can reasonable programm a socket communication which can be used by the loadsave.cc routines and some more generate UDP style for ticks then things should be not too far away.
I like to look at great maps and see how things flow. A little like a finished model railway, but it is evolving and actually never finished. http://www.simutrans.com
